Slow Down Culture

Slow Down Culture

(Written By unknown)

It's been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working for them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes 2 years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It's a rule.

Globalize processes have caused in us (all over the world) a general sense of searching for immediate results. Therefore, we have come to posses a need to see immediate results. This contrasts greatly with the slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate, debate, hold x quantity of meetings and work with a slowdown scheme. At the end, this always yields better results.

Said in another words:
1. Sweden is about the size of San Pablo, a state in Brazil.

2. Sweden has 2 million inhabitants.

3. Stockholm, has 500,000 people.

4. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, Nokia are some of its renowned companies. Volvo supplies the NASA.

The first time I was in Sweden, one of my colleagues picked me up at the hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and snowy. We would arrive early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance (2000 employees drive their car to work). The first day, I didn't say anything, either the second or third. One morning I asked, "Do you have a fixed parking space? I've noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied, "Since we're here early we'll have time to walk, and whoever gets in late will be late and need a place closer to the door. Don't you think?” Imagine my face.

Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe name Slow Food. This movement establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time to taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing.

Slow Food is against its counterpart: the spirit of Fast Food and what it stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week.

Basically, the movement questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by globalization, fueled by the desire of "having in quantity"(life status) versus "having with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being". French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British (True?). Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity been driven up by 20%. This slow attitude has brought forth the US's attention, pupils of the fast and the "do it now!".

This no-rush attitude doesn't represent doing less or having a lower productivity. It means working and doing things with greater quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less stress. It means reestablishing family values, friends, free and leisure time. Taking the "now", present and concrete, versus the "global", undefined and anonymous. It means taking humans' essential values, the simplicity of living.

It stands for a less coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and more productive where humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do.

It's time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious quality with no-rush that will increase productivity and the quality of products and services, without losing the essence of spirit.

In the movie, Scent of a Woman, there's a scene where Al Pacino asks a girl to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend will be here any minute now". To which Al responds, "A life is lived in an instant". Then they dance to a tango.

Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we only reach it when we die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time. Others are so anxious of living the future that they forget to live the present, which is the only time that truly exists. We all have equal time throughout the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time. We need to live each moment.

As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

Congratulations for reading till the end of this message. There are many who will have stopped in the middle so as not to waste time in this globalized world.

Sorry No Cure

Sorry No Cure

somebody hurt me very recently. actually it was over 3 weeks. at each incident, i confronted somebody about it. at each session somebody apologized again and again and express regrets at having wronged me. somebody could not even explain why somebody did it; somebody just said that it was a spur of the moment sin. somebody plead temporary insanity.

the first time it happened, i nearly died. my heart broke. the usual thoughts of being angry and betrayed and upset consumed me i was unable to function for 2 days. then we talked it out and somebody apologized and we put it behind us. or

so i thought.

a few days later it happened again and again i confronted somebody. somebody said that it was just a residual mistake. so i gave somebody the benefit of the doubt and again, we put it behind us.

then two weeks later, it happened. this time it happened on a larger scale. like tammy-tay-nyp-scandal proportions. this time there was no room for doubt as the evidence literally landed in my lap. does it ever end?

i consider somebody as someone important to me. that’s why i stayed and fought tooth and nails not to give up on somebody and work with somebody to overcome these obstacles.

somebody has apologized repeatedly. somebody admitted the mistakes, somebody tried to make up for it. come to think of it, somebody is still trying to absolve the wrongdoings to me.

so now the ball is in my court. yes, all the lies, the cover-ups, the sneaking around hurt. and now i need help to forgive somebody.

i considered payback. will this help? should i go out and do something that is of equal weight as what somebody did to me? so that somebody can feel the hurt somebody dished out? sorry ah, no strength to be the bigger person here.

i told somebody “i forgive you, but i cannot forget it just yet.” and somebody said, “it’s ok. take your time.”

so now i have the time, but no means. how do i forgive somebody? i keep remembering what somebody has done, it keeps replaying in my mind! does anyone know a doa/prayer to help me forget?

You're Sorry? You're Sorry?!

You're Sorry? You're Sorry!?

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

really...say it with me.

to err is human. to forgive, divine.

My Boss And Me

My Boss And Me

when i take a long time
i am slow.

when my boss takes long time
she is thorough

when i don't do it

Six Common Job-Interview QuestionsBy Tom Musbach (published on Yahoo!HotJobs 19 March 2007)

Try These Sample Questions to Help Get Ready

One of the easiest ways to build confidence before a job interview is to prepare answers to questions you might be asked. Whether you're applying for a position as a web programmer, accountant, or legal secretary, interviewers often use some general questions to assess candidates, so you'll increase your chances for success if you prepare for them in advance.

Six common questions are listed below, along with insights from several recruitment professionals about how to answer. As part of your interview preparation, take the time to formulate answers to each question, focusing on specific tasks and accomplishments.

"What are your strengths and weaknesses?"
This is one of the most well-known interview questions, and interviewers often ask it indirectly, as in, "What did your most recent boss suggest as areas for improvement in your last performance review?"

Lindsay Olson, founder of Paradigm Staffing Solutions, a firm specializing in hiring public relations professionals, suggests tailoring your "strengths" answer to skills that will benefit the prospective employer. Though you may have a knack for building gingerbread houses, it might be of little value for the job at hand.

When it comes to weaknesses, or areas of growth, Olson recommends building on your answer to include "how you have improved, and specifics on what you have done to improve yourself in those areas."

"Why did you leave your last position?"
"Interviewers will always want to know your reasoning behind leaving a company ? particularly short stints," says Olson. "Be prepared to tell the truth, without speaking negatively about past employment."

"Can you describe a previous work situation in which you ... ?"
This question comes in many forms, but what the interviewer is looking for is your behavior on the job. Your answer could focus on resolving a crisis, overcoming a negotiation deadlock, handling a problem coworker, or juggling multiple tasks on a project.

The theory behind this type of question is that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior, according to Yves Lermusi, CEO of Checkster, a company that offers career and talent checkup tools. "The key to responding well is preparing real job examples, describing your behavior in specific situations that demonstrate important skills that the job requires."

"What is your ideal work environment?"
This question is not about whether you prefer a cubicle or an office, so think broadly to include ideas about supervision, management styles, and your workday routine.

Bob Hancock, senior recruiter for video game publisher Electronic Arts, says that he uses this question with candidates because it can give "a sense of their work habits, how flexible they are with their schedules, and how creative they are."

"How do you handle mistakes?"
The best strategy for this general question is to focus on one or two specific examples in the past and, if possible, highlight resolutions or actions that might have relevance to the job you're interviewing for.

"Employers want to know they're hiring someone with the maturity to accept responsibility and the wherewithal to remedy their own mistakes," says Debra Davenport, a master professional mentor and columnist for the Business Journal in Phoenix.

"What is your most notable accomplishment?"
Paradigm Staffing's Olson suggests that candidates think of three or four accomplishments and quantify what their actions meant in terms of increasing revenues, saving resources, or improving resources.

"Being able to quantify your achievements in your career will launch you ahead of the rest," she says, "and demonstrate your ability to do the same as a future employee."

Why It Was None Of Your Business

sorry about the previous post. i had a lot of steam to let off.

i was minding my own business at the office that day. as usual i went to the water cooler to get my drink. suddenly there was this voice, asking, “so, you’re not pregnant yet, is it?”

huh? i looked up and it was this woman from another division. i don’t even know her name, but
maybe she knows mine, (but that doesn’t really count coz i’ve been around the wayang drama agency for over three years now, so by default a lot of people would know me, but i digress)

so back to this woman. sure we talk, i greet her the common “good morning!” / “going for lunch?” / “long day, huh?” as i greet anyone but we are probably as close to being friends as mars is from pluto (which isn’t even a planet anymore, i hear...but i digress. again)

well, the blinking point it, i don’t know her from adam and here she is asking that question. i was
still recovering when she jumped in with the next question. “you are family planning is it? how, ah you family planning?”

what the …

*gobsmacked* how rude! how rude! how rude!

you tell me? how?

Who Do You Think You Are?

MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS.
